A New Low for Manchester United

A New Low for Manchester United

After losing the Europa League final in May, some Manchester United fans would have told you that there surely couldn't be a lower point for the club, but unfortunately there is. United crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, losing to Grimsby Town on penalties after what can only be described as an utterly embarrassing performance by both the players and manager. Ruben Amorim is once again under immense pressure, and he has even hinted at the possibility of resigning from his position.

After the final game of last season, Amorim addressed the Old Trafford crowd claiming that "the good times are coming". At that point, he still had some credit in the bank with a decent proportion of United fans. The pre-season and transfer business also gave fans hope. United totally revamped their forward line and the vibes from the camp were good. Plenty of players were quoted on the "family" feel to the dressing room and performances in the pre-season friendlies certainly helped to give that impression. When United's Premier League campaign started against Arsenal, many were pleasantly surprised by the intensity on show despite the fact they lost the game 1-0. Matheus Cunha was the player who caught the eye the most, with his incredible ability to drive with the ball and create goalscoring opportunities. In the aftermath of the Arsenal game, United were praised for their performance but since then, it has turned back for the worse as the scars from last season have appeared again.

From the moment Bruno Fernandes blazed his penalty over the bar against Fulham, the United from last season reared its ugly head again. There was a lot of concern over the performance in the second half of that game, as United tried to see the game out after scoring, and all that culminated in the horror show at Grimsby Town on Wednesday night. From the first whistle at Blundell Park, it looked quite likely that Amorim's team were not going put out a comfortable performance. What didn't help was André Onana's two diabolical errors which gave Grimsby their goals and sucked the confidence out of the team. Even in the penalty shootout, there were at least 3 penalties which Onana probably should've saved, and its now easy to see why United are heavily linked with buying Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. Amorim's post-match comments also didn't help the situation at the club. It sounded like he was hinting at offering to resign after the Burnley match but the comments has been characterised as a emotional outburst by the head coach since. One thing's for sure though - pressure is building for Amorim and he needs to start winning matches.
